Help Us Build Kristie's Place

What is Kristie’s Place?

We are currently raising money to open Kristie’s Place, the first children's end-of-life care facility in Southern California and only the third one in the nation. Kristie’s Place is at the heart of a nationwide movement to improve the way we care for terminally ill children.

Currently, 92% of children dying of a terminal illness are dying in pain and without adequate end-of-life care. Kristie’s Place will focus on life and helping families make the most of every moment their child is alive. We will also focus on pain management and ensuring that no child suffers, thus allowing these children to live every day to its fullest. Kristie's Place will be warm, and comfortable; a place where families can find solace and support during some of the hardest days of their lives.

How will Kristie’s Place be used?

End of Life Care: Most parents do not want their child to die in the hospital, but their only other option is to bring them home. Sometimes this is not possible and/or it creates many challenges for families.

As a Bridge: Some families decide that ultimately they want to take their child home but need a bridge or transition place between hospital and home. Kristie's Place will also be used for symptom and pain management.

Respite: Families can get some much-needed help and rest during difficult days of caring for their critically ill child. They can stay at Kristie's Place and get the help they need to carry on.

What will Kristie's Place be like?

Suites: Kristie's Place will have 6-8 suites designed to meet the needs of the children. The suites will include the required medical equipment, yet maintain the appeal of a home atmosphere so. Each suite will have a private bathroom, a small kitchen, and direct access to a private patio.

Fireside Room:  The Fireside Room will have many inviting areas. From the large, attractive central room there will be access to the library, computers, a game room and more. The area will be comfortable with beautiful views and doors that lead outside to the gardens, play area and an outdoor patio.

Art/Activity Room: Designed for various activities, this will be a great place for fun for the children and their siblings. It will be also be used for music therapy.

Hydrotherapy Room: Hydrotherapy is a large spa that offers many therapeutic benefits including pain relief.

Reflection Room & Memorial Garden: These quiet, non-denominational areas will be a comforting place for families, friends and caregivers who might want to spend time alone or with others coping with similar challenges. It will provide areas to reflect, meditate, pray, plan or just relax.

Petting Zoo: Children, families, and guests will be able to enjoy the petting zoo where friendly animals can be pet and fed. Pet therapy will be an important part of Kristie's Place.

Patios, Playground & BBQ Area: Beautifully landscaped areas for the families to spend time.

House Kitchen & Dining Room:  Local restaurants, caterers, chefs and volunteers will man the commercial grade kitchen, preparing meals for children and visitors that are at Kristie's Place.

King Dillan, Kristie's Princess & Special Guests: Kristie's Place will help families make the most of every moment their child is alive. Kristie's very own King Dillan & Princess will tuck kids in bed and host special guests and visits by celebrities.

At Kristie's Place, we will help children live fully and find comfort in their final days.

F A Q

What is Kristie's Place?
Kristie's Place will be a very special place for terminally ill children. It will be a large, comfortable home with 6-8 suites. Mom and Dad can be parents while our medical staff helps with the child's medical needs and our psycho/social team helps the entire family's special needs .

What makes Kristie's Place special?
At Kristie's Place, the focus will be on life and making the most of every moment a family will have with their child.

How will families be able to use Kristie's Place?
Families can use Kristie's Place for end-of-life care, as respite when they require a much-needed break, or as a transition during which families need to learn how to take care of their child once they return home for their final days.

Who pays for the care at Kristie's Place?
We take children regardless of the family's ability to pay. Our commitment is to provide compassionate care and support so children's final days will be in peace and comfort and dignified.

What services and programs are provided by Kristie's Place
Kristie's Place will provide experts in pain and symptom management. There will be many programs that will meet the unique social and emotional needs of these children and families as well.

Are there other facilities like Kristie's Place?
The first and only free standing facility is the George Mark House in Northern California. Kristie's Place will be the first in Southern California and only the second in the nation.

Who provides the care at Kristie's Place?
Kristie's Place will be staffed with round-the-clock nursing care. A physician will be on-call at all times. Therapists and others will be staffed as needed.

Why would families choose to bring their child to Kristie's Place rather than a hospital or home?
Choices for families are extremely limited. Most families do not want their child to die in a hospital setting and for some, bringing them home is not an option. Certain medications can not be given at home. Staying at Kristie's Place will  provide a home-like setting, while the child receives all the medical care needed.

How is Kristie's Place funded?
Kristie's Place will primarily be funded by donations.  We will also accept MediCal, private insurance, public donations, grants and gifts.
